Abstract

<PICT:1115118/C6-C7/1> In an open hearth furnace 4 a slag pocket 3 is used as a melting chamber for pig iron supplied by a shoot 1, the molten iron running off continually into chamber 6 fired by oil burners 7 to be topped off into ladle 9 as required to make up the open hearth furnace charge. The shoot 1 which is mounted on a supporting frame running on wheels longitudinally of the furnace may be inserted and withdrawn through a charging opening in the slag pocket 3.
