Abstract

Cupola furnaces; reverberatory furnaces. - A cupola furnace 1 for melting pig iron, steel, scrap metal, and the like is heated partly by the combustion of coke mixed with the charge and partly by hot gases from burners 12 arranged in the top and sides of a chamber 7, which is in communication with the shaft 1 through a slag-separating chamber 4 and conduit 3. The chamber 7 is formed with openings 15 for the supply of alloying or other material and is connected by channels 6, 5 respectively, to the upper and lower ends of the separator 4, which latter also communicates through a damper-controlled opening 8 with a recuperator 9 serving to supply heated air to the burners 12. In starting up, after the cupola 1 has been charged, the dampers 10, 11 are closed and the burners 12 lit, the gases passing through passages 5, 4, 3 into the shaft 1 to ignite the coke therein. Blast is then supplied through the tuyeres 2 and, as soon as molten metal appears in the channel 5, the dampers 10, 11 are opened, thus permitting the burner gases to pass through the passage 6 and thence partly to the shaft 1 and partly to the recuperator 9. The slag which. floats on the metal in the chamber 4 is drawn off through a tap-hole 14. The burners 12 are supplied, from an external source, with liquid, gaseous, or pulverulent fuel, and the amount of air supplied thereto from the recuperator 9 may be varied to produce an oxidizing or reducing flame. A modification is described in which the chamber 4 is arranged to deliver molten metal to two burner chambers 7 arranged one on each side thereof. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 3663/78.
