Abstract
1,209,873. Cupola furnaces. PENZENSKY KOMPRESSORNY ZAVOD. 21 March, 1969, No. 15030/69. Heading F4B. [Also in Divisions C6-C7] The shaft of a cupola furnace for melting and refining iron is divided by opposed shoulders 1, 2, into an upper charge melting chamber 4 and a lower molten metal superheating chamber 5, through which the drops of molten metal from the upper chamber 4 fall to a well 10 in the furnace bottom 9. Gas burners 12 are provided above the well 10 and D.C. electrodes 13, 14 and 15 are respectively located in the furnace bottom 9, in the shoulder 1 and above the burners 12 in the chamber 5, the electrodes 13 and 14 being of opposite polarity. Arcs are struck between the electrodes and the drops of molten metal, to both superheat them and inhibit their re-oxidation. Hot gases from chamber 5 pass up through chamber 4 to melt the charge. The molten metal and slag produced eventually flow into forehearth 19 to be tapped.
