Abstract
758,248. Metal-melting furnaces. NEWTON, CHAMBERS & CO., Ltd. Jan. 29, 1954 [Oct. 29, 1952], No. 27213/52. Class 51(2). In the production of steel in a combined cupola and open-hearth furnace, metal melted in one of a pair of cupolas 2 is topped off at intervals along a channel 12 into a collecting hearth 4 from which at less frequent intervals, it is tapped off through holes 14 in the U- shaped wall 7 into a refining hearth 6. The hearths are heated by main burners 18 in end wall ports 20, and by auxiliary burners in ports 42, 44, and the waste gases pass through ports 22, 24 in the wall 7, over the collecting hearth 4, and through a passage 26 into the cupola 2. A metal recuperator 28 of the 180 type disclosed in Specification 758,247 [Group XIII] is disposed over the cupola shaft, and air from a pump 30 passes through an upper recuperator header 34, heat-exchange tubes 36 and a lower header 38 for distribution to a cupola tuyere 48, main burners 18 and to the auxiliary burners. Fuel is fed into the cupola from hoppers 46 is disclosed in Specification 758,246.
