Abstract
269,959. Murakami, Y. Jan. 19, 1926. Shaft furnaces. - In a shaft furnace in which valves are provided between the bottom of the shaft proper and the hearth to control the descent of the charge into the hearth, a downwardly-open partition 9 provided with vents 10 is mounted in the throat of the shaft 4, said partition providing constant communication between the hearth 12 and the shaft 4 and diverting the charge toward the valves 2. The valves 2 comprise segmental cylindrical shutters which present their convex surface upwards towards the shaft and which are rotatably mounted on pivots so that they can be rotated from beneath covers 1 to close up the openings between the partition 9 and the shaft 4. The reducing gases for the iron ore &c. in the shaft 4 are produced by blowing air through tuvers 5, 6 on to ignited fuel on the hearth 12 or by injecting pulverized coal, oil, &c. through the said tuyers. The valves 2 and the partition 9 may be water-cooled and the melting of the product in the hearth may be assisted by electric heating.
