Abstract

<PICT:1121741/C6-C7/1> Scrap iron is pre-heated to a temperature of 1800-2400 DEG F. in a refractory lined container 1 by burners 5 mounted in the cover 4 of the contained. Outlets 19 for the hot gases between the body of the container and the bottom which has hinged doors 2 are restricted so that the pressure within the container is above atmospheric. The fuel/air ratio of the burner supply is controlled to give an amount of oxidation calculated in accordance with the carbon content of the remaining portion of the charge fed to a steel making furnace. A layer of coal may be placed on top of the scrap metal to give a desired small amount of oxidation, and the waste gases may be recirculated to control the oxidation and the temperature attained by the scrap.
