Abstract

260,143. Dyer, Y. A. Jan. 25, 1926. Shaft furnaces; charging.-Pig or scrap iron or other metal is melted in a cupola or like furnace 10, which contains a charge consisting of thin layers of fuel alternating with relatively thick layers of metal, by hot gases generated in a separate combustion chamber 15. The latter communicates through ports 20 with a wind-box 19 to which a blower supplies air or oxygen under a pressure of from “ to 1¢ lbs. per square inch, the blower also delivering air to roof flues 22 from which it passes down through pipes 23 and enters the box 19 in a heated condition. A partition 14 divides the combustion chamber 15 from an outlet flue 16, 26, serving for the passage of the hot gases to a belt 27 surrounding the shaft 10 and communicating therewith by ports 28, openings 32 from the pipes 23 being provided for the admission of a further supply of air to the flue 26. The partition 14 may extend upwardly to the roof of the combustion chamber, in which case openings 17 are provided for the passage of the hot gases.
