Abstract

Generating by waste gases.-The fire-bars of furnaces are replaced by a .bed of refractory material, on which is placed iron ores, pig iron, iron or steel scrap, or other irony substances, with or without the addition of limestone or other suitable flux. Solid, liquid, or gaseous fuel or waste gases may be supplied to the furnace, and where an intense heat is desired, the bed of refractory material may be provided with electrodes to convert the iron &c. into a molten condition. The Figure shows the invention applied to a water-tube boiler. The fuel and other materials are fed from the hopper 4 by the conveyer 5 on to the refractory bed 6 provided with water-cooled electrodes 7, 8. An arch 13 serves to form a combustion chamber and reflect heat on to the fuel on the conveyer as it is supplied. Air admission inlets 11 are provided in the wall 2. Producer gas, blast furnace gases or waste gases may be supplied to the furnace. When waste gases are employed, they are led over the molten material on the bed 6 through downwardlydirected passages in the wall 2, the conveyer 5 and arch 13 are dispensed with, and the irony substances are charged on to the bed 6 through the doors shown.
