Abstract
864,947. Open-hearth furnaces. UNITED STEEL CO'S. Ltd. Feb. 20, 1959 [Feb. 21, 1958], No. 5751/58. Classes 51 (1) and 51 (2). At each end of a reversible open-hearth furnace having a tilting hearth 1, an off-take unit 10 has a removable or rotatable downtake unit 78 of dog-leg shape attached thereto which terminates in a mouth 89 which mates with the mouth 88 of. one of a pair of slag pockets 84 provided for alternative use. Each pocket 84 is connected by a passage 91 to a regenerator (not shown) and the walls of the units 10, 78, pocket 84, passage 96 and regenerator are formed of steel casings with refractory linings. The unit 10 is urged towards the hearth 1 by doubleacting rams (not shown) and has a gas-tight seal with the unit 78 maintained by a cylindrical skirt 82 which projects downwardly from a flange 83 on the unit 10 into the water so that the unit 10 may be swivelled about the vertical axis of its upper part 94 in charging pockets 84.
