Abstract
843,714. Refining steel. STORA KOPPARBERGS BERGSLAGS A.B. Jan. 28, 1958 [Feb. 1, 1957], No. 2827/58. Class 72 [Also in Group XII] During the refining of molten iron in a tilting rotary furnace 1 by an oxygenrich gas supplied through a water-cooled tuyere 32, the furnace lining 3, above the bath area where the oxygen-rich gas strikes the melt, is protected by blowing thereon through another water-cooled tuyere 40 a granular solid suspended in and carried by a gas. The gas may be carbon dioxide or steam, and the granular material quicklime, limestone or iron ore. The solid material may be fed through a valve 46 info a chamber 45 having a lower grid 47 through which fluidizing gas is supplied by a pipe 49, additional gas being supplied if necessary through a pipe 51. The chamber 45 is connected to the tuyere 40 by a flexible tube 41. Solid material may also be introduced through the tuyere 32. The furnace has a cradle 13 pivotally mounted in bearings 15 so that it may be tilted away from the water-cooled exhaust hood 27 for charging or discharging operations. One of the supporting rollers 9 is driven by a motor 19 through gearing 20, 21, and retaining rollers 23 engage the rings 7. The lining 3 may be magnesite or dolomite.
