Abstract

1354300 Direct production of steel CONZINC RIOTINTO OF AUSTRALIA Ltd 30 Dec 1971 [6 Jan 1971] 60690/71 Heading C7D An electric arc furnace or induction furnace is converted for continuous operation by the addition of a refining zone 8. Hot pre-reduced iron ore and carbon are charged to the furnace and the liquid semi-steel produced flows down passage 7 into the refining zone 8 where it is acted upon by lances 9 which inject O 2 - containing refining gas and fluxes. The liquid metal path is shown by continuous lines and that of the slag by broken lines. The refined metal is tapped at outlet 10 and the slag at outlet 13. In another embodiment Fig. 2, (not shown) the slag flow counter-current to the metal in the refining zone 8 is caused to flow into an auxiliary slag reservoir (12) from which the slag is tapped.
