Abstract

543,245. Steel. WALDRON, F. B. Aug. 13. 1940, No. 12911. [Class 72] Steel is manufactured in a plurality of furnaces arranged in combination forming a sequence so that the metal flows continuously from one furnace to the next, each furnace containing an amount of metal to ensure that the incoming metal will disperse and circulate with it and maintain it at a constant level so that it will always flow out continuously, and each furnace being isolated so that it can be maintained continuously with the best slag, atmosphere and temperature for carrying out one or more of the reactions for converting iron into steel. The furnaces may be heated by gaseous, liquid or powdered fuels or electrically e.g. in a corelessinduction furnace and the others isolated to prevent the flow of slag or furnace gases from one furnace to the other. In the plant shown in Fig. 1, the iron from the blast furnace A flows through a trough B, intermittently or continuously into a mixer C. The metal flows continuously by a trough D to a gas-fired open furnace E where it is decarburized by the addition of iron ore or mill side fed thereto. The metal then flows through a trough F into a basic furnace G a gate L preventing the flow of slag, where it is de-phosphorized and the metal then flows by a trough J into a furnace K, a gate H preventing the flow of slag, where it is desulphurized. The metal then flows into a finishing furnace N where finishing materials which may include chromium, nickel and molybdenum, or pig iron to increase the carbon content or de-oxidizing agents such as ferro-silicon, ferromanganese or ferro-vanadium are added. In another form the metal flows from the mixer C to a converter thence into two electric furnaces in a sequence and then into a coreless-induction finishing furnace.
