Abstract

Low carbon structural steels containing up to 0.3 per cent. C more than 0.012 per cent. N. more than 0.30 per cent. Mn, and less than 0.04 per cent. P are produced by blowing an oxygen atmosphere containing more than 75 per cent. oxygen and the balance nitrogen on to the surface of the melt at least during the latter part of the refining process, and then subjected to cold working or quenching from 650-750 DEG C followed preferably by ageing naturally or at temperatures up to 400 DEG C. The ageing may be performed along with a subsequent operation, e.g. galvanising.
