Abstract

In a method of manufacturing steel in a converter, the latter part at least of the blowing is carried out with a mixture of oxygen and superheated steam only, the thermal effect of the mixture being at least at great as that of atmospheric air. The steam may be superheated to 200-300 DEG C. and its percentage in the mixture may be less than 50 per cent. by an amount dependent on the weight of scrap introduced into the converter. A system of valves for mixing the steam and oxygen is described and illustrated.
