Abstract
Cast iron is obtained by a modification of the process claimed in the parent Specification in which the quenching in the first phase is either a step-quench into oil at 90-110 DEG C. or a direct quench into cold oil. A further modification consists in reducing the time for nucleation treatment to five minutes to three hours when the castings are of thin section or include alloying elements which favour martensitic quenching or graphite uncleation, e.g. Ni (0.4 per cent-2.0 per cent), or Mn (up to 1.3 per cent) for martensitic quenching and Al (0.1 per cent) for graphite nucleation.
