Abstract

A cast iron having "as-cast" an austentic, bainitic or martensitic structure with excess carbon in the nodular form contains Mn 2,5-10% and Mo 0,5-3,5%, the balance of the composition being such that the required structure could not be obtained if the Mn and Mo were outside the ranges specified. Preferably the cast iron contains Cu 0,2-2,5% and it may be stress-relieved at 500-900 DEG F. and annealed at 1600 DEG F. for decomposition of excess carbides. Specification 645,862 is referred to.
