Abstract

A free machining, plain carbon or low alloy, steel contains as machinability improving additions: (a) one or both of Se and Te in the range 0.02-0.1%, and (b) up to 0.1% of sulphur such that addition (b) is not greater than addition (a) in weight per cent but gives an atomic excess of sulphur relative to the Se and/or Te content. The steel has a Mn content of at least 0.6% (preferably 0.6-1.65%), a Si content of not more than 0.05%, an iron content of at least 90% and preferably a carbon content of 0.1-0.18%.
