Abstract

202,181. Coplan, A. H. Sept. 4, 1922. Alloys. - Low-carbon nickel chrome steel is made by melting scrap iron in a furnace, removing the carbon, silicon, sulphur, and phosphorus by means of an oxidizing-slag, adding such a proportion of ferro-chrome the carbon content of which has been reduced to about 3 per cent as will give the steel a carbon content of not more than 0.15 per cent and a chromium content of 1.25 per cent, and finally adding 2 per cent of nickel. The steel is purified by the addition of a small percentage of ferro-silicon and of a small ingot consisting of 50 per cent of aluminium and 50 per cent of ferro-titanium just prior to casting, when the temperature of the steel is 3500‹ F.
