Purifying and refining.-In a process for the manufacture of extra low carbon steel, pig iron and scrap steel in equal quantities and the usual amount of limestone employed in ordinary practice are melted in a basic open-hearth furnace and the heating is continued through the boiling period until the metal contains less than 0.05 per cent of carbon. Manganese in the form of a ferro-alloy is then added to the melt, preferably in the ladle, in such a quantity that the finished product will contain less than 0.03 per cent of oxygen and 0.15-1.0 per cent of manganese. Steels containing in addition 0.15-6.0 per cent of copper or 0.15-6.0 per cent of copper and 0.03-0.25 per cent of molybdenum may be prepared by the addition of the alloying ingredients to the charge in the furnace or ladle.
