Abstract

An improved iron alloy resistant to corrosion by mineral acids is prepared from cast iron containing not less than 3 per cent of carbon and 1,5 per cent of silicon, by adding 0,5-2 per cent of copper and 0,25-0,75 per cent of chromium, the amount of chromium not exceeding and preferably less than the copper. Ordinarily the iron contains 3-3,5 per cent of carbon and 1,5-3 per cent of silicon together with the elements usually present in cast iron such as manganese, phosphorus, sulphur. Small percentages of titanium, vanadium, or other such alloying metals may also be present, such percentages being negligible compared with those of copper and chromium. The chromium in a form such as ferro-chrome containing 30 per cent of chromium and the copper may be added in the ladle or in the furnace or cupola. In an example the alloy contains 2,25 per cent of silicon, 3,35 per cent of carbon, 0,70 per cent of copper, 0,43 per cent of chromium, 0,65 per cent of phosphorus, 0,70 per cent of manganese, 0,06 per cent of sulphur.
