Abstract

The nitrogen content of a previously air-melted metal is controlled by remelting the metal in a consumable electrode arc furnace under a nitrogenous atmosphere. Thus, the nitrogen content may be increased, maintained or reduced by employing the appropriate partial pressure of nitrogen. The preferred atmosphere is a mixture of argon and nitrogen.
