Abstract
Chromium-containing alloys are produced by the addition to a metal bath of exothermic charges comprising an intimate mixture of ferrochromium, oxidized chromites, aluminium and one or more of the elements silicon, calcium, manganese, magnesium, and their alloys with each other. The weight of chromium in the ferro-chromium is not less than 60% of the total chromium provided by the charge, while the oxidized chromite contains not less than 16% of chromium, 1-9% of combined sodium and 18-26% of combined calcium. The reducing agent for the chromite may be so constituted that the resultant slag has the composition: .Al2O3.42-45% .CaO.36-40% .MgO.6-8% .SiO2.7-9% .Na2O.4-6% The oxidized chromite is prepared by submitting to a single treatment at 800-1100 DEG C. in the presence of air or oxygen an intimate mixture of chromite ore, sodium carbonate and at least one of calcium oxide, calcium carbonate, magnesia and dolomite, the proportion of sodium carbonate being 15-40% of that stoichiometrically required by the equation: 2 Cr2O3.FeO + 4 Na2CO3 + 4 CaO + 3.5 O2 --> 4 CrO4Na2 + Fe2O3 + 4 CaCO3. The exothermic charge may furthermore contain 4-9 parts of milled fluorspar per 100 parts of chromite.
