Abstract

1,208,079. Production of Mg and an Al-Si-Fe alloy. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. April 23, 1968 [May 1, 1967], No.19134/68. Headings C7A and C7D. Magnesium metal is produced by reducing a mixture of calcined dolomite and magnesia, containing 50-80% MgO and 20-50% CaO, with an Al-Si-Fe alloy (e.g. 3-8 parts of weight of the mixture per part of the alloy) at 1575-1700‹C (e.g. 1625‹C) and at a pressure of 0À5-2 atmospheres (e.g. 1 atmosphere), the amount of the reactants being so adjusted that in the final slag, the weight of CaO is equal to 0À5-1À1 (weight of Al2O3) + 1À0-1À6 (weight of SiO2). The reducing alloy may comprise 40-90% Al and 1-20% Fe, the balance being at least 9% Si, and is preferably produced by electric arc melting (e.g. at 1800-2500‹ C and a pressure of 0À5- 2 atmospheres) of a mixture of Al2O3 (bauxite), SiO2 (clay) and iron oxide in the presence of carbon. A valuable by-product of the magnesium production is ferro silicon (e.g. containing 30-80% Si). A Fe-Si-Caalloy may also be produced which can be treated to recover the elements therein.
