Abstract

1290921 Distilling magnesium J M AVERY 28 Jan 1970 [3 Feb 1969] 4120/70 Heading C7D A molten state reduction process for the production of metallic magnesium using a metallic (including silicon) reducing agent, with distillation of the magnesium is performed in presence of a chemically inert gas at a partial pressure of a least 1/10 atmosphere. The inert gas may be H 2 , He, Ar or Ne. The reducing agent may comprise aluminium, silicon, calcium, with iron optionally present. The reducing agent and magnesium oxide are preferably fed to a slag at a temperature of at least 1300‹ C. preferably 1400-1700‹ C. The slag composition may be 10-60% CaO, 10-35% Al 2 O 3 20-50% Si and 5-25% MgO. The absolute pressure of the vapour phase is preferably ¢-1 atmosphere but may be as high as 5 atmospheres. The inert gas may be introduced in a stream which may be recycled.
