Abstract

1412697 Producing magnesium and alumina J M AVERY 17 April 1973 [18 April 1972] 18475/73 Heading C1A [Also in Division C7] Magnesium is produced by charging an oxide mixture comprising magnesium oxide and calcium oxide and a metallic reducing agent comprising at least 85% aluminium into a reactor and maintaing therein a molten calcium aluminate slag, removing when the magnesium oxide content of the slag is less than 5% by weight slag comprising from 35 to 65% by weight Al 2 O 3 , 35-55% CaO and from 0 to 10% SiO 2 , evolving magnesium vapour from the reactor to a condenser and condensing and recovering the mangesium. The slag produced may be self-disintegrating upon slow cooling or may be ground, the resulting powder being leached with sodium carbonate for one or two hours at 70‹ C. to produce calcium carbonate and sodium aluminate which is carbonated to produce aluminium hydroxide which may be calcined and used as cell feed alumina or may be subjected to a desilication step before use as cell feed alumina. The aluminium so formed may be recycled as a reducing agent. The so formed calcium carbonate may be calcined to produce CO 2 for use in the carbonation process and CaO which is recycled.
