Abstract
A process for preparing low calcium strontium-containing ferrosilicon, comprises smelting a mixture of quartzite, celestite and a carbonaceous reducing agent in a submerged arc furnace to provide an alloy containing .Sr.15-55% .Si.40-75% preferably containing no more than 10% of impurities such as Fe, Ba and C. This alloy is then added to molten ferrosilicon containing at least 98.5% (Fe + Si) to provide a strontium content of at least 0.5% (e.g. 0.5 to 4%). The ratio of Sr to Ca in the celestite and in the master alloy must be at least 10 to 1.
