Abstract

A basic oxygen steel making furnace comprises a generally pear-shaped tank, means for directing an oxygen blast into the tank, and a refractory lining formed at least in part of a fused refractory consisting of, in weight per cent, magnesia more than 85; Cr2O3 more than 5 but less than 15; and from 0 in each of the following up to the specified maximum-iron oxide 10; one or more of CaO, BaO and SrO 3; Al2O3, 8; ZrO, 8; SrO2, 3; B2O3, 3; P2O5, 3; TiO2, less than 0.5; the sum of TiO2 + Al2O3 + ZrO2 + SiO2 + B2O3 + P2O5 bein less than The lining can be placed on top of an insulating layer.
