Abstract
A fused cast refractory is obtained by fusing a charge containing at least one refractory mineral oxide by means which does not involve the introduction of reducing substance into the charge from the heating means, the atmosphere in contact with the molten charge being oxidizing. In a modification, the atmosphere is neutral. Heating can be by striking an arc between electrodes positioned above the charge; by a high frequency magnetic field; by the combustion of hydrocarbons in oxygen; or in a furnace heated by the sun's energy. Oxides specified are: alumina, silica, zirconia, singly or in combination, the examples describing (1) a mixture of all three, and (2) 99.5% Al2O3, <0.4% Na2O. A mixture of chromite, magnesia and alumina is also mentioned.
