Abstract
A fused, substantially uniform iron oxide catalyst is produced by fusing magnetite, and/or iron oxide obtained by melting iron in oxygen, in an electric induction furnace in the presence of one or more iron oxide catalyst promoters, MgO being specified. The furnace is preferably lined with a basic refractory such as magnesite which may also function as the promoter.
