Abstract

Phosphorus-containing manganese ores are smelted in a blast furnace under a slag containing CaO, MgO and SiO2 in which the ratio CaO + MgO:SiO2 is from 1.7-2.8 and in which the proportion of MgO is greater than 3 per cent, preferably 6-18 per cent. The slag may contain 18-30 per cent Al2O2.
