Abstract
A refractory composition comprises a fine fraction of dead-burnt magnesia (i.e. such that at 90% passes through a 72-mesh B.S. sieve) having a SiO2 content of at least 2% by wt. and a CaO content of less than 2% by wt. a coarse fraction (90% retained on 72-mesh sieve) of dead-burnt magnesia having a SiO2 content of less than 1% by wt., and a chrome ore having a SiO2 content of less than 2.5% by wt. The composition may be shaped and fired at a temperature less than 1700 DEG C. to produce a fired refractory brick having a silica content of less than 3% by wt. The fine fraction of dead-burnt magnesia may be present in amount 28-35% by wt. of the composition, and the proportion of total magnesia to chrome ore in the fired refractory may be from 90:10 to 60:40 by wt.
