Abstract
A basic refractory brick comprises coarse MgO particles at least 90% of which are plus 28 mesh (Tyler) and forming 50%-90% by weight of the total MgO content, fine MgO particles with at least 90% minus 48 mesh forming 10%-50% by weight of the total MgO, the intermediate sized particles forming less than 10% of the MgO content, and 0,5% to 12 1/2 % by weight of calcined Al2O3 of which at least 70% is plus 35 mesh. Magnesite containing 88,6% MgO plus CaO, Al2O3, Fe2O3 and SiO2 is a suitable source of MgO and 1%-10% of minus 28 mesh iron powder is added as a bond. Additional bonding agents are: -sulphuric acid, sodium acid sulphate, chromic acid, magnesium sulphate, sulphate paper waste, lignin or kaolin, and the moistened compressed mixture may be fired above 1550 DEG C. or fired during use. The ratio of CaO to SiO2 in the brick may exceed 1. Specifications 546,220, 711,933, 778,047 and U.S.A. Specification 2,063,543 are referred to.
