Abstract
779,095. Cathode materials; magnetrons. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 29, 1955 [Jan. 12, 1955], No. 990/55. Class 39(1). The cathode 10, particularly of a magnetron, has a surface portion 11 coated with an electron emitting material, indirectly heated by a heater 12, and a coating of titanium sesquioxide on another surface portion 13, 13<1> for increasing its thermal emissivity. The pole pieces 5, 51 may be provided with inner sleeves 9 whose inner surface 14 may also be coated with titanium sesquioxide. The coating may be formed by treating the surface with a suspension of titanium hydride in cellulose nitrate, heating the coated part in vacuo to about 1,000‹C. to convert the hydride into metallic titanium, heating it in an oxidizing atmosphere at 350‹C. to convert the metal into the dioxide and then heating the coating in a reducing atmosphere at 1100‹C. to convert the dioxide into titanium sesquioxide.
