Abstract

745,441. Heavy-ion-beam tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 18, 1953 [March 21, 1952], No. 7485/53. Class 39 (1). An ion source of the kind in which the ions are generated by the impact of vapour on a heated anode surface, the anode 16 is integral with a store 12 of readily volatilizable metal 3 and is kept at a different temperature from the store by heater 15. The vapour passes through apertures 13 and 20 and impinges on the outer surface of anode 16, and the resultant ions pass through accelerating electrode 17 and utilization device 19 to collecting electrode 18, which is provided with a layer of absorbent material. Suitable combinations of anode and ion-forming metals are (a) platinum with caesium, rubidium, potassium, barium, sodium, or lithium, or (b) nickel or iron with caesium, rubidium or potassium; anodes may also be of molybdenum, tungsten or carbon.
