Abstract

In a process of coating with metals, particularly Al, by depositing the metal from the vapour state thereof, the coating metal is fed, in vacuo, on to the surface of a heated body consisting principally of carbon and the surface of which includes a carbide of Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, Si, Ni or Fe and may also include a free metal, preferably the free base metal of the carbide. The carbon body may be of circular cross-section, or may have a flattened face, or may be troughed on the side to which the coating metal is applied. A titanium carbide layer may be formed by applying an aqueous or alcoholic suspension of titanium hydride and heating to 1800 DEG C. by repeated application and firing, free titanium is ultimately found on the outside of the carbide layer. Nitrides may be used instead of hydrides. Reference is also made to coating with Au, Ag, Ti, Zr, Cr and Ni. Specification 740,073, [Group XI], is referred to.
