Abstract

In a process of shaping sintered cemented carbide bodies the cementing metal is removed from the surface of the bodies e.g. by leaching, the resultant skeletal surface zone is then shaped and the shaped bodies are then resintered to reinfiltrate cementing metal into the surface zone. The carbide may be at least one of the carbides of W, Ta, Nb, Ti, Zr, Mo and the cementing metal at least one of Co, Ni, Mo, Fe, Cr, W, Mn. The cementing metal is preferably removed by etching for 1/2 to 72 hours in an aqueous solution of up to 25% ferric chloride and containing HCl to give a pH of 2 to 4. Leaching is carried out at 160 DEG -200 DEG F., and part of the carbide body may be masked with vinyl tape. After shaping the leached surface e.g. by grinding, resintering is effected at 2300 DEG - 2800 DEG F., in vacuum, a neutral or hydrogen atmosphere. Using the process intricate shapes such as files, clamping jaws, undercuts, holes may be formed in sintered cemented carbide.
