Abstract
Wood fibre panels having a polished surface for direct use for building and decorative purposes are made as follows:- The wood, in fragmentary form, is boiled in water, then hot-treated with an aqueous sodium carbonate solution to neutralize the organic acids set free during boiling, and an aqueous sodium sulphite solution to eliminate part of the lignin contained in the wood. The wood fragments are then disintegrated to form fibres, the fibres are brought into suspension in water, and the suspension is treated in a press with a filtering bottom to form moist panels, which are then hot-moulded in a multiple press to confer thereon a patterned glossy surface. When the wood contains tannin the initial boiling in water is carried out to such an extent as to reduce the tannin content to not more than 1 per cent. based on the dry wood (large quantities of tannin form iron tannate which darkens the panels). Only 20 to 30 per cent. of the lignin may be eliminated by the sodium sulphite. The proportion of salts used may be 7 per cent. of sodium sulphite and 0.7 per cent. of sodium carbonate (based on the dry wood). The wood may be wood waste, e.g. that left by obtaining tannin from chestnut wood.
