Fireproofing; proofing processes and composttions.-Wood and similar material such as cork is fireproofed by impregnating it with an alcoholic solution of ammonium bromide and then treating it to remove the liquid. The impregnation may be carried out by the application of heat at a comparatively low temperature, and the alcohol may be removed by heating. Alcohol containing about 20 per cent of water may be used, and other organic solvents such as acetone, chlorinated, hydrocarbons or furfural may be used. Preferably, the impregnation.is effected in a closed heated chamber; after, impregnation the solution is removed, and the heating continued at about 80‹ C. to drive off the liquid. The alcohol vapour may be passed into a condenser to recover the solvent. A suitable degree of vacuum may be applied to the vessel during this heating. Other salts which are soluble in water or alcohol and have a fireproofing or preservative action may be added to the solution.
