Abstract
Acetylene is made by heating a mixture of methane and hydrogen to above 1000 DEG C. for a period between 0,1 and 0,005 second. At reaction temperatures up to 1300 DEG C. and above 1500 DEG C., the proportion of hydrogen in the mixture may be any proportion between 75 and 90 per cent, while at reaction temperatures between 1300 DEG C. and 1500 DEG C. the maximum permissible proportion of hydrogen varies regularly from 90 per cent at 1500 DEG C. to 80 per cent at 1300 DEG C. The products should be rapidly cooled and this may be effected, at least in part, by heat-exchange with fresh gas mixture. Acetylene may be recovered from the products by means of a solvent such as acetone, and the residual methane may be returned to the reaction or otherwise utilized. The process may be effected in tubes of refractory material, such as silica or carborundum, or in apparatus comprising refractory tubes arranged to form annular reaction spaces, as described in Specification 440,432, or in refractory tubes having solid cores. Various methods of heating the tubes are indicated. An example is given in which a mixture containing methane 20 and hydrogen 80 per cent is passed through a silica tube heated to 1500 DEG C.
