Abstract

338,003. International Industrial & Chemical Co.; Ltd. Nov. 21, 1928, [Convention date]. Barium carbide is made by heating barium oxide or carbonate with carbon and an inert, infusible, porous substance such as bibarytic silicate, in a current of hydrogen, hydrogen and carbon monoxide, methane, &c. No fusion occurs at the temperature of 1400-1600‹ C. used, and the product is treated to produce acetylene and baryta which is re-used. The bibarytic silicate is added as such or formed during the reaction by adding silica or silicates. The reaction gases may be drawn off by a vacuum. The mass is cooled and treated with steam or water to give acetylene. The product, or part thereof, may be washed with hot water to dissolve the baryta and decompose the bibarytic silicate giving baryta and the insoluble monosalt. The insoluble residue, which also contains excess carbon, silica occuring as an impurity in the carbon, and sometimes barium carbonate, is suspended in water and treated with carbon dioxide till neutral. Caustic alkali or alkali carbonate is then added to dissolve the silica, and the residue, after addition of carbon, and barium carbonate equivalent to the baryta removed, is used again for making carbide, the monobarytic silicate recombining with silica to form bibarytic silicate.
