Abstract

Alkali and alkaline-earth metal chromates and dichromates are obtained by the aqueous phase oxidation of chromium or its alloys in the presence of alkalies or alkaline-earths by the use of oxidizing gases (oxygen or air) under pressure at temperatures of say 150-300 DEG C. Caustic alkalies, alkali carbonates or bicarbonates particularly the sodium salts, and lime are the specified alkaline reagents, but in the production of dichromates they may be replaced by the corresponding chromates. When carbon dioxide is produced in the reaction, as when an alkali carbonate is employed, it is either removed in the gas current or in working in closed autoclaves chemically bound, as by the addition of lime. Ozonized oxygen or air, and halogens are also specified for use as oxidizing agents. A statement of the art refers inter alia to oxidation of ferrochrome by treatment with fused caustic alkali or with alkali carbonate and saltpetre, or by heating above 1000 DEG C. with alkali carbonate. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) is not limited to the use for oxidation of oxidizing gases under pressure. Hydrogen peroxide may be used, and ferricyanides be added when air or oxygen is employed. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
