Abstract

In the manufacture of chromates or dichromates by oxidizing chromium or its alloys in an aqueous medium at temperatures above 100 DEG C. under pressure, any other substances capable of yielding alkali or alkaline-earth during the reaction are used in place of or together with the alkali or alkaline-earth hydroxides, carbonates, or bicarbonates employed according to the parent Specification. In the manufacture of dichromates the alkali &c. yielding substance may also replace the monochromate used in the parent Specification. The alkali &c. yielding substance may act also as oxidizing agent for the reaction, and mixtures of substances which yield alkali only and which both yield alkali and act as oxidizing agents may be employed. Specified substances which may be used are alkali or alkaline-earth sulphates, chlorides, phosphates, acetates, silicates, aluminates, nitrates, chlorates, persalts, manganates, and permanganates. In one example a mixture of ferrochrome, anhydrous sodium sulphate, calcium carbonate, and water is heated at 280-290 DEG C. in a current of air or oxygen under pressure to obtain sodium dichromate; by using more sodium sulphate sodium monochromate is formed. In another example, potassium dichromate is obtained from ferrochrome by the action of potassium chlorate in the presence of calcium carbonate at 290-300 DEG C. oxygen under pressure being passed through only towards the end of the reaction. In a further example using trisodium phosphate and a reaction temperature of 280-300 DEG C. in a current of air or oxygen, sodium monochromate and disodium phosphate are formed. In a last example, potassium dichromate is obtained from ferrochrome and potassium sulphate, an alkaline-earth oxide or carbonate being preferably present to neutralize the free sulphuric acid formed.
