Abstract

Alkali phosphates are obtained by heating in an aqueous medium phosphorus alloys, such as ferro-phosphorus, in the presence of an oxidizing agent such as air or oxygen, and an alkali hydroxide or carbonate or other alkali compound such as the aluminate, silicate phosphate or organic salt thereof. When, for example, trisodium phosphate is employed, this is converted to the dibasic salt, which is then heated under pressure with sodium carbonate to obtain trisodium phosphate. The conversion of the alloys may be effected in stirring autoclaves, temperatures of 150 DEG C. and 200--300 DEG C. being specified. When carbon dioxide is evolved, this is removed by a current of gas, and may be condensed or solidified. A statement of the prior art refers to the production of alkali phosphates by heating iron phosphate and alkali carbonate solution under pressure. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of substances containing elementary phosphorus and describes the production of potassium phosphate. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
