Abstract

The pyrosulphates of the alkali metals and of ammonia may be prepared in a powdered form by heating the corresponding bisulphates or a mixture of the sulphate with sulphuric acid to a temperature of 200-300 DEG C. (preferably at about 250 DEG C.) under reduced pressure and with agitation. The temperature at the end of the reaction is kept below the melting-point of the product, so that the latter solidifies and is broken up by the agitator. The heat is conveniently applied by an alternating current between carbon electrodes. According to an example sodium bisulphate or its equivalent in sulphate and sulphuric acid is heated to 250 DEG C. in a flat iron pan fitted with an agitator and the pressure reduced to 26-28 inches of vacuum.
