Abstract
Secondary amines are produced by hydrogenating aliphatic nitriles at 140-240 DEG C. and 100-1000 p.s.i.g. in the presence of a copper-chromium oxide catalyst; it is not then necessary to form primary amines as intermediates. The nitrile preferably has 8-22 carbon atoms and may be saturated or unsaturated, the double bonds in the latter being unaffected. Particularly suitable are unsaturated nitriles of 14-22 carbon atoms, e.g. those of 18 carbon atoms and 1-3 unsaturated linkages. Preferred conditions are 150-215 DEG C. and 200-400 p.s.i.g. An inert solvent may be used but is not necessary. Formation of tertiary amines is suppressed by the addition of caustic alkali. The products can be quaternated, e.g. by treatment with methyl chloride. Examples show the hydrogenation, under various conditions, of the nitriles of tallow and soya fatty acids and of n-dodecyl nitrile.ALSO:A copper-chromite catalyst is prepared by mixing aqueous solutions of copper sulphate, sodium dichromate and ammonia, drying the precipitate and heating to a temperature not exceeding 320 DEG C. (c.f. J. Ind. Eng. Chem., 1934, 26, 878). It is also stated that commercial copper-chromite catalysts may be stabilized with barium oxide.
