Abstract
b -Alanine is prepared from cyanoacetic acid by hydrogenating a salt of cyanoacetic acid in ammoniacal solution in the presence of a nickel catalyst. The preferred salt is the potassium salt. The reaction may be carried out in aqueous or alcoholic solution, preferably at superatmospheric pressure and slightly elevated temperature. In examples: (1) potassium cyanoacetate is hydrogenated at 90 DEG C. and under 100 atmospheres pressure in a stirring autoclave in ammoniacal methyl alcohol solution in the presence of Raney nickel catalyst (2) a solution of cyanoacetic acid in aqueous ammonia is hydrogenated at 120 atmospheres pressure and 20 DEG C. in the presence of a nickel catalyst; (3) an aqueous solution of cyanoacetic acid is neutralized with potassium hydroxide and after the addition of aqueous ammonia hydrogenated in the presence of a nickel catalyst.
