Abstract
The invention comprises tertiary alkyl cyclohexane carboxylic acids and a salt thereof and their method of preparation which comprises contacting an alkaline aqueous solution of a water soluble salt of the corresponding tertiary alkyl aromatic acid with hydrogen at elevated pressure and a temperature of at least 150 DEG C. in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst, and subsequently converting the resulting salt to the acid. As water-soluble salt there may be used an alkali or alkaline earth metal or ammonium salt. The hydrogenation may be effected at a pressure between 500 and 3,000 pounds per square inch in the presence of Raney nickel, at a temperature of 150-190 DEG C to produce the cis isomer and at a temperature of 190-300 DEG C. to produce the trans isomer.
