Carboxylic acids are obtained by heating together for a short time an alkaline earth metal salt of a diarylketone carboxylic acid and an alkaline earth metal oxide or hydroxide. Substituted ketone carboxylic acids may be used for the production of substituted carboxylic acids. In examples alpha-naphthoyl-o-benzoic acid yields alpha-naphthoic and benzoic acids, and o-benzoylbenzoic acid yield two molecules of benzoic acid. Specification 289,544 is referred to.
