Phenyl-a-naphthylketone is prepared by heating an alkaline-earth salt of a-naphthoylo-benzoic acid, preferably in the presence of an oxide or hydroxide of an alkaline-earth metal. In an example, calcium alpha-naphthoyl-o-benzoate is heated in the presence of calcium hydroxide under reduced pressure, when phenyl-alpha-naphthylketone distils over.
