Abstract

Alkali sulphides are obtained by treating a solution of an alkali metal salt such as sodium nitrate, chlorate carbonate, or sulphate, with barium sulphide in an atmosphere of sulphuretted hydrogen admitted from an external source. The product is cooled out of contact with air and the barium nitrate is separated from the sodium hydrosulphide by crystallization, after which the hydrosulphide is converted to sulphide. The separation of the reaction products is facilitated by adding a small quantity of carbon disulphide. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) includes the use of alkaline earth sulphides instead of barium sulphide, alkali silicate as the alkali salt, and other reducing agents such as hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbons instead of sulphuretted hydrogen to supply a reducing atmosphere. A modification is described in which the reaction is effected in the dry way, sodium metasilicate, barium or calcium sulphide, and a small quantity of charcoal to provide the reducing atmosphere, being heated to 350-1500 DEG C. at a pressure of 25 cms. of water. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
